How I stumbled upon this amazing system…
When I was entering high school, I was literally the classic 99 pound weakling. I mean, if I sat sideways in class, the teacher would mark me absent! As a result, I got picked on a lot, made fun of a lot, and my self-esteem was very low. One day, one of my friends said to me, “why don’t you lift weights to get bigger?” This seemed at the time like a very odd thing for him to say, because the idea that people could get bigger by lifting weights was completely foreign to me.
As it turned out, that statement changed my life.
Shortly after that, I was in a pharmacy one day with my mother, looking at magazines while she was shopping. Suddenly I noticed a picture of a guy with the biggest muscles I had ever seen! He looked like a super hero to me. He turned out to be a bodybuilder named Boyer Coe, and the magazine he was on was called Muscular Development. I grabbed the magazine and scanned through it with excitement. I felt like I had found the keys to the castle! Inside were tons of instructions on how to build up your body by lifting weights. I convinced my mother to buy me the magazine, and later convinced my father to buy me a weight set. I was totally motivated to get as big as that guy on the cover.
The next year I hooked up with a couple of older kids I knew from my high school wrestling team who were working out with weights at a local YMCA, working out 3 days a week. Throughout my high school years, I did get bigger and stronger, but nothing spectacular. In addition, I developed a keen interest in physical fitness and exercise, and decided to major in Physical Education in college.
Once in college, I suddenly found myself with a lot more free time on my hands. I started to read more and more bodybuilding magazines, which at the time (in the 70’s) were pretty much the only source of training information available.
Suddenly I had a brainstorm-
If working out three days a week was producing good results, then working out six days a week should produce great results! After all, that’s what all the big bodybuilding stars in the magazines were doing, and everybody knows more is better, right? So I embarked on a 2-hours-a-day, 6-days-a-week program, just like all the champs were doing-working different muscle groups on different days. And I got excellent results-for a couple of months.
Then, I suddenly found myself constantly tired, and I actually started getting smaller and weaker!
“How can this be?” I thought. “These routines I’m following seem to be working for the Pros in the magazines-why aren’t they working for me?”
I bought even more muscle magazines, and studied them even harder, trying to figure out why I wasn’t getting the same results everybody else seemed to be getting. Maybe I just wasn’t motivated enough. Maybe I needed more protein powder or supplements. Maybe I actually needed to do more sets than everybody else. I had to be missing something.
Then I read somewhere in some magazine that it takes many years to achieve your genetic potential for big muscles. I figured that was it-I just needed to re-dedicate myself, suck it up, and keep dragging myself to the gym and pounding away with the weights-and eventually, someday, somehow, I would get the results I wanted so desperately.
About that time I graduated from college and got a job managing a fitness center, working long hours 6 days a week. I knew I was facing a serious dilemma: I no longer had 12 hours a week to devote to exercise, yet as manager of the fitness center I had to continue working out and staying in good shape to set a good example.
I was totally frustrated.
I was getting weaker instead of stronger, my muscles were getting smaller instead of bigger, I was exhausted all the time, and I had a fitness center to run. I feared I would have no choice but to abandon my goal of having a strong, muscular body. What was I going to do?
My Turning Point
Then I started noticing articles in the bodybuilding magazines about a new guy on the scene named Mike Mentzer. I was in my early twenties at the time, frustrated by my lack of progress training 6 days a week with multi-set workouts.
Early in his bodybuilding career, Mike himself had been in that position too. He placed 10th in the 1971 Mr. America contest, which was won by 19-year-old sensation Casey Viator. Mike befriended Casey, and found out that Casey was using a training system that was radically different than what everybody else was doing-maximum effort, short and infrequent workouts.
Casey told Mike he should talk to Arthur Jones, the guy who had trained him, who was also the inventor of Nautilus exercise equipment.
Mike did that, learned all he could from Jones, and became one of the greatest bodybuilders in history.
In addition to having an unbelievable physique (he won the 1978 Mr. Universe contest with a perfect score), he was gaining notoriety for developing a training system that was radically different than what everyone else was doing. His program at that time consisted of 45-minute workouts, only 4 times a week-but performed with a very high level of intensity. For me at that time, reading his articles was like a breath of fresh air!

He backed up his techniques with a logical, well thought-out rationale that made perfect sense to me, and reflected my own frustrating training experiences.
I now knew why my multi-set, 6-day-a-week split routines where not bringing me any results-my body was simply unable to recover from those marathon workouts.
I decided to turn myself into a human guinea pig, try the principles out on myself and see what happened. I had nothing to lose!
The Results Were Nothing Short of Amazing!
While cutting my workout time from 12 hours a week down to only four 45-minute workouts a week, I gained 16 pounds of muscle in the next 16 weeks, while keeping my body fat under 7 percent!
I was ecstatic! Every day, people were telling me how great I looked-and a few even looked at me funny, and hinted that I could only grow that fast if I was “on something”. Plus, my strength was exploding to levels I never dreamed were possible for me!
I felt like I had been given the keys to the muscle building kingdom!
Mike retired from bodybuilding in the ’80’s, left the scene for a while, and then resurfaced in the ’90’s as a trainer. One of his most famous clients at that time was multiple Mr. Olympia winner, Dorian Yates.

By training dozens of clients, and consulting with hundreds who sought his advice, Mike had refined his system to what he felt was the most productive methods of High Intensity Strength Training to date. His new program involved even less sets and workouts per week!
Since I got such awesome results with his old training program, I wanted to learn everything I could about his new training methods. I got in contact with Mike, went to California to have him train me, and communicated with him by phone many times.

Tragically, Mike passed away on June 10, 2001 from heart disease. He was only 49 years old.
Mike Mentzer not only taught me how to train; but also how to think, and apply the lessons learned in training to the rest of my life: to analyze situations with logic and reason, make a plan first, apply the plan with 100% intensity, and reflect and adapt until the goal is ultimately achieved. He always encouraged me to think for myself, and never accept anything blindly, without critically analyzing it-not even the things that he taught me.
With his words in mind, I continued to study, train and experiment with other programs on the market, in addition to Mike’s.
And what I found was that all the programs I tried-even the ones I got great results from-didn’t seem to have the perfect combination of exercises, sets and repetitions. They were either too long to allow for full recovery-which leads to overtraining, my original problem-or were to brief and limited to provide complete development.
Something was still missing.
Inspired by Mike’s memory, I set out on a quest to find that perfect combination of exercises, sets and reps that would give the best possible results for the average guy with above average goals-and in the least possible amount of time.
Finally, after years of constant work and dedication, I reached my goal, and conceived a workout system that provides immediate, continuous and dramatic results-in less than 40 minutes per week!
